A Wilson Family Christmas
By Terry Wilson
The season of Advent and Christmas has always been a special time for the Wilson’s. Each year we have the opportunity to be with our extended family to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. Lots of joy, conversation, and expressions of love abound. Of course, all of this is embellished by tables of food fit for a king. Each family unit brings their favorite dishes and we share abundantly. We love to eat and this year, I will join in heartily.
When everyone is satisfied we gather for a time of worship. Each year one of the family members of the host home reads the Christmas story. We read Luke 2:1-20 usually from the King James version of the Bible. All the noise and conversation ceases for a while. There is silence as we honor the reading of God’s Word and bow before Him in awe and wonder. We take time to reflect on how much God loves us—so much so, that He sent His Son to redeem a lost and sinful world. This moment of worship is such an important time for every family member. And then, the silence is over and glorious sounds of music ring throughout the house. It’s time for the Wilson family to SING!!! We all participate, in harmony of course, by singing our favorite Christmas carols and hymns. Our family choir is back together and for a moment all seems right with the world. Soon, our time together is over and we go our separate ways full of love, peace and harmony.
For Brooke, Faith (Brooke’s sister), Lindsey, and myself, we then turn our focus toward Christmas Eve and our church. When Christmas Eve arrives we take time for a quiet afternoon meal before heading to church. Soon we gather with you, our church family, to worship as a body of Christ. We could never imagine it any other way.
These are just a few of the traditions within our family. Brooke and Faith grew up going to church on Christmas Eve. I grew up with a family gathering on Christmas Eve, no church service offered. Now we have the best of both worlds. Family gathering is around the 22nd each year. Presently our family members are active in their own church on Christmas Eve. It’s a wonderful way to live, worship, and pass these ways to Lindsey. It is as though an angel visits and reminds us, “for today in the city of David there has been born for you a Savior, who is Christ the Lord”.
God Bless and Merry Christmas,
Terry, Brooke, and Lindsey
