The Twelve Apostles - Lenten Devotional for March 9th

Please read the scripture from The Message, then meditate on it as if you were a disciple then meditate some more.

I’ve been following Jesus awhile now. Peter, James and John are always closest to him – literally. I’ve always been the kind of person who hangs back – who listens a lot and says little.

Then one day Jesus invited 12 of us to climb a mountain with him. None of us expected it to be anything super special. Jesus likes going off by himself – or with just a few – especially after a day like today – crowds of people from all over the country – not just Galilee. He’d been healing people and casting out demons all day.

Today – he picked 12 – he called us apostles. Then he told us why he picked us. The plan was that we would be with him, and then he would send us out to proclaim the Word and cast out demons – all by ourselves.

I don’t know which one of us was more flabbergasted…
