Paying taxes to Caesar - Lenten Devotional for March 16th

Please read the scripture from The Message, then meditate on it as if you were a disciple then meditate some more.

How many Pharisees are there? Today brings a new group of Pharisees – with a new approach –
“Teacher, you have integrity… you challenge your followers…  you teach the way of God accurately…”

Wait for it – the trap –
“Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar?”

Jesus did not hesitate – he knew it was a trick question – we all knew it was a trick question.

Jesus said “Bring me a coin.”
Jesus said “Whose name is on it?”
They said “Caesar.”
Jesus said “Give Caesar what is his and give God what is his.”

Those new Pharisees never knew what hit ‘em. Their big debate/trap was over in a sentence!

I bet they don’t come back.

I wonder if they got the part about “Give God what is his?”
So simple.  Yet is says so much.
