Daily Devotion for Advent - December 8th

Musical memories of Christmas

At our home, we’ve been discussing songs of Christmas and the feelings that are stirred up within us as we hear them. Many of the secular Christmas songs bring a smile to our faces as we’re drawn back to our childhood memories of Christmases long past.

As we’ve matured not only in years, but also in faith, the Christian Christmas songs stir up many different feelings in us.  When we hear Away In A Manger and Oh Little Town Of Bethlehem we feel humble knowing God’s holy child was born in a barn that housed the animals.  Songs like Joy To The World, We Three Kings, and Go Tell It On The Mountain bring more light-hearted and upbeat feelings to us as we want to share the good news of God’s love with all the world!

Our own FUMC Christmas Cantata (coming up December 13th) sets the mood for us as we relax and enjoy the music and songs of Christmas.

But our very favorite time is on Christmas Eve when we gather with our church family and share in the Candlelight Service as we sing Silent Night.  We’re always touched by this service of worship and it’s hard to explain the feeling that comes over us.  It’s bittersweet as we think of this tradition being part of the church for so many generations.  We miss those who have lit their candles and sung in the past and are no longer with us.  As we picture our loved ones joining us in song from Heaven’s Choir, there’s always a great calm and peace that overtakes and enfolds us.

We  ask you to embrace and be aware of the many feelings that will be stirred up in you as you hear the various songs Of Christmas this year.
