A Night Filled with Hope - Terry Wilson

"The virgin will be with child
and will give birth to a son,
and they will call him Immanuel-
which means, God with us."
                        Matthew 1:23

At St. Nicholas Church in Oberndorf,Austria, Joseph Mohr (priest) wrote the magnificent text "Silent Night, Holy Night." He asked his friend Franz Gruber to set this text to melody. The reason being, the organ was in disrepair.  Thus, on December 24, 1818 Mohr & Gruber presented "Silent Night, Holy Night" during the Christmas Eve worship service.  The song was simple, pure, beautiful as the two friends sang with guitar accompaniment.

A glorious Christmas song of hope was born in this tiny village.  Now one could have imagined this song being sung throughout the world.  When the organ repairman arrived at the church he found the music written down on a piece of paper.  With permission he gave "Silent Night" to friends who started sharing the beautiful carol.  "Silent Night" found its way to America in 1849, published first in a Methodist hymnal.

This year when we sing this glorious text, let us remember that Christ is the hope of the world.  A Saviour is born, hearts are changed and the world once again worships the Christ child.  As Christians, we love to sing and we love to share God's word to a world in need of hope - hope through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
