Let us
hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.
(NIV)
Hebrews 10:23
I find myself repeatedly drawn to passages of scripture that
are sources of encouragement. Many of
these verses are simple in structure, however powerful in their meaning. The author of Hebrews urges his reader to hold
on to the hope we profess in Christ, for God is faithful. Considering that the original audience was
likely an early Christian living in a dangerous place and time, what a strong statement
of encouragement to send to a fellow brother and sister in Christ!
As we the people of Christ’s church reflect on His sacrifice
for us during the season of Lent, let us be deliberate in our encouragement of
one another. All around us are prayers,
both spoken and unspoken, for needs including healing, wholeness, economic
security and comfort in times of grief and loneliness. I can recall specific
periods of worry and anxiety in my own life when a note of encouragement or a
catch up visit from a childhood friend provided much needed encouragement to
follow God’s path.
I pray that each of us initiate a deliberate act of encouragement
this Lenten season.
Amen.
